Temple Torah of West Boynton Beach | Learn the Past, Live the Present, Plan the Future

Holocaust Learning Center

The Holocaust Learning Center of Temple Torah of West Boynton Beach was established in 2007 on the second floor of the Temple’s school wing.  On November 8, 2008, the HLC became affiliated with the Center of Holocaust and Human Rights Education of Florida Atlantic University located in Boca Raton. The goals of the HLC were promulgated in a Mission Statement by a committee of Temple members, who volunteered to implement the vision.  The center is concentrated in one room that contains a library with books for children and adults; a DVD library; a collection of documents from the Nazi period, teleconferencing equipment; and three computers.

The center is used for lectures, classes, meetings.  With the aid of the teleconferencing equipment we were able to connect with Yad Vashem in Jerusalem for a live lecture. Additional lectures, using this equipment, are planned.

We have cooperated with the Alpert Jewish Family and Children’s Service in developing programs and classes.  We co-sponsored lectures by the Simon Wiesenthal Center that brought renowned speakers to Temple Torah.

Our film screenings, offered approximately every six weeks, draw a large crowd of steady participants.  A facilitator introduces the film and follows it up with audience participation.

We are in an ongoing process of translating documents from the Nazi era.  Students from the religious school use the facility for research. They are taught by members of the committee in additional to their own teachers.

Temple Torah students, who decide to participate in the March of the Living, receive a stipend from the HLC.

The Holocaust Learning Center is responsible for the planning and execution of three commemorations during the year:  Yom Hashoah, Kristallnacht, and International Holocaust Remembrance Day.  These events, as well as movies and lectures, are open to the general public.

Upcoming Events

FILMS

The  Holocaust Learning Center of Temple Torah will present the film, “The Counterfeiters” on Wednesday, February 22, at 7:00 pm.

This Australian movie is based on the memoirs of Adolf Burger, a typographer who was imprisoned in 1942 for forging baptismal certificates to save Jews from deportation. He was later interned in Sachsenhausen to work on Operation Bernhard. This was a secret plan to forge millions in Bank of England Bank Notes and U.S. dollars.

The movie offers some fascinating issues regarding the moral conflicts resulting from the price we are willing to pay to increase our chances of individual survival.

Facilitator: Kenneth Cohen
